The CITIZEN Group participates in and endorses various domestic and international initiatives to contribute to the realization of a sustainable society in response to our social responsibility as a manufacturer and the demands of the international community.
In April 2005, The CITIZEN Group announced its participation in the United Nations Global Compact, which is based on the ten principles of human rights, labor, environment, and anti-corruption advocated by the United Nations. The UN Global Compact is the foundation of The CITIZEN Group's CSR activities, and we refer to it when necessary, such as when revising The CITIZEN Group Code of Conduct. The CITIZEN Group is also a member of ten subcommittees of the Global Compact Network Japan (GCNJ), which consists of companies participating in the UN Global Compact: Supply Chain Subcommittee, Environmental Management Subcommittee, Internal Penetration Research Subcommittee, SDGs Subcommittee, ESG Subcommittee, CSV Subcommittee, WEPs Subcommittee, Reporting Research Subcommittee, Human Rights Due Diligence (HRDD) Subcommittee, and Circular Economy Subcommittee. Each subcommittee shares the latest CSR-related trends and case studies from each company, including lectures by experts, while at the same time producing a variety of outputs to support corporate CSR promotion based on the experience of participating companies in a wide range of industries. The opinions gained at the subcommittee meetings are also reflected in The CITIZEN Group's CSR activities.
In June 2021, CITIZEN WATCH announced its support for the "Challenge to 30% by 2030" of the Japan Business Federation (Keidanren). The "Challenge to 30% by 2030" is a goal set forth in the "New Growth Strategy" released by Keidanren in November 2020 to achieve a ratio of 30% or more female executives by 2030. The Group will continue to promote diversity and inclusion by working to encourage the active participation of a diverse range of people.
As a proactive response to climate change, one of the most pressing global environmental concerns, The CITIZEN Group is actively engaged in comprehensive initiatives aimed at mitigating greenhouse gas emissions. This entails extensive energy-saving endeavors implemented across our factories and offices, alongside the incorporation of electricity sourced from renewable energy outlets.
As a testament to our commitment to combat climate change, we joined the Climate Change Initiative and embraced the TCFD (Task Force on Climate-Related Financial Disclosures) recommendations in 2020. Furthermore, in 2022, we undertook a revision of the Group's CO2 emission reduction objectives, spanning Scope 1, Scope 2, and Scope 3 emissions. Additionally, our disaster Business Continuity Plan (BCP) encompasses strategies designed to address the potential impact of significant climate change-induced disasters.
CITIZEN WATCH has attained certification from the Science Based Targets (SBT) Initiative* for The CITIZEN Group Environmental Goals 2030. These goals outline our greenhouse gas emissions reduction target for 2030, and their scientific foundation aligns with the standards set by the Paris Agreement. The CITIZEN Group has consistently advanced endeavors aimed at diminishing greenhouse gas emissions. These efforts encompass energy-saving measures within manufacturing processes, the transition to LED lighting, and the establishment of photovoltaic power generation systems. Our commitment remains resolute in integrating renewable energy solutions and collaborating with both customers and suppliers to curtail greenhouse gas emissions across the entire supply chain. This approach serves to realize our aspiration for a sustainable society.
CITIZEN WATCH is a supporting member of the Japan Climate Leaders’ Partnership (JCLP), a group of companies committed to realizing a sustainable, decarbonized society.
In the revised CITIZEN Group Environmental Vision 2050, adopted in April 2020, The CITIZEN Group wholeheartedly commits to decarbonization in order to attain near-zero greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and ensure the sustainable utilization of resources. Of specific significance and in alignment with one of the key materiality issues identified within our Medium-Term Management Plan 2024, which pertains to addressing climate change and fostering a society centered on recycling, we are intensifying our efforts in the realm of climate change initiatives. This includes the attainment of Science Based Targets (SBT) certification, a milestone achieved in January 2023.
Seizing the occasion of our participation in the JCLP, The CITIZEN Group aspires to actualize a decarbonized society in alignment with the principles of the Paris Agreement. This endeavor involves advancing decarbonization endeavors through the robust adoption of renewable energy and complementary measures. By doing so, we are dedicated to playing a role in the realization of a sustainable society.
The CITIZEN Group wholeheartedly aligns with the principles advocated by the Task Force on Nature-related Financial Disclosure (TNFD)*. Our dedication to this cause is evident through our membership in the TNFD Forum, an organization fostering stakeholder collaboration to shape an effective information disclosure framework. Rooted in the essence of The CITIZEN Group Biodiversity Vision, we acknowledge the intrinsic significance of ecosystem services derived from biodiversity, as well as the influence our business undertakings exert on biodiversity. In this pursuit, we are resolute in collaborating with local communities to safeguard and conserve biodiversity.
We are committed to sustaining our collaboration with the TNFD to facilitate the creation of the envisioned information disclosure framework. Concurrently, we will advance the judicious dissemination of data concerning natural capital, working steadfastly to cultivate a bond of confidence with our stakeholders – encompassing shareholders, investors, and beyond. Through these efforts, we are steadfastly dedicated to perpetually augmenting our corporate value.
On April 26, 2023, The CITIZEN Group joined the 30 by 30 Alliance for Biodiversity, an initiative to preserve biodiversity, which is an important issue for global environmental conservation.
The Alliance is a collaborative coalition comprising companies, local governments, organizations, and more, with a shared objective to enhance the existing protected areas in Japan (constituting about 20% of the land area and 13% of the marine area). The primary aim is to certify and oversee regions designated for biodiversity preservation efforts, known as Other Effective Conservation Measures (OECM*). These areas encompass private corporate forests and other spaces actively engaged in biodiversity conservation. The overarching goal is to contribute to the international 30x30 commitment, which seeks to safeguard 30% of the world's land and ocean territories by the year 2030.
Grounded in The CITIZEN Group Biodiversity Vision, the Group has been consistently engaged in conservation efforts for gossamer-winged butterflies, specifically the Large Shijimi Blue and Reverdin's Blue species, which inhabit its operational sites. Through active participation in the Alliance, we are committed to sustaining collaboration with local communities to advance biodiversity preservation. This commitment is driven by an understanding of the inherent significance of biodiversity's advantages, notably ecosystem services, and an awareness of the influence our business operations wield on biodiversity.
The CITIZEN Group endorses the Keidanren Initiative for Biodiversity, and our biodiversity philosophy is consistent with the principles of the organization's Declaration of Biodiversity.
CITIZEN WATCH endorses the Partnership Building Declaration.
We are committed to adhering to the Partnership Building Declaration outlined below. Our aim is to foster novel partnerships by facilitating collaboration and mutual coexistence with our network of supply chain partners and value-driven enterprises.
The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) were launched in 2016 with the aim of solving social issues relating to poverty, hunger, energy, climate change, and peaceful societies, among others, by 2030. It notes that in order to achieve the SDGs, which consist of 17 goals and 169 targets, all countries and people who are members of the United Nations must have a sense of ownership and take action in cooperation with each other. As a member of the international community, The CITIZEN Group will contribute to the formation of a sustainable society by working to solve social issues, including the achievement of the SDGs, through the Group's businesses that are "Loved by Citizens and Working for Citizens.” Through further business expansion, we aim to be a company that can continue to operate for the next 100 years.
