The CITIZEN Forest at CITIZEN WATCH’s Tokyo Works has been among the first batch of green spaces certified under the Evaluation and Certification System to Secure Urban Nature and Green Space (TSUNAG System) established by the Japanese Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism.
As part of the 100th anniversary celebrations of CITIZEN WATCH Co., Ltd., in 2019, a green space called the “CITIZEN Forest” was created on the Tokyo Works grounds after removing old factory buildings. From the perspective of enhancing employee wellness, we recognize not only indoor spaces but also outdoor landscapes as essential components of a workplace. With its location and geographical context taken into consideration, the site is designed under an afforestation plan to combine various miscellaneous trees from the Musashino Plateau to convey the beauty of the seasons. The green space not only serves as a workplace for employees but also as a habitat for a diverse range of living creatures and a place for local community interaction. The CITIZEN Forest’s ongoing growth is supported by the Tokyo Works’s sustained efforts, including step-by-step forest management based on long-, medium-, and short-term plans, assessment of the environmental effects of the forest, such as its CO2 absorption, monitoring of living organisms, and environmental education for employees. TSUNAG certification has been awarded to the forest in recognition of its status as an abundant corporate green space that can fulfill multiple functions in an urban environment surrounded by residential areas.
Evaluation and Certification System to Secure Urban Nature and Green Space (TSUNAG System)

The CITIZEN Forest is one of the first TSUNAG certified projects. Based on the evaluation results, the system rates those companies. This evaluation system is mentioned in the Low-Carbon City Development Practice Handbook and the Guidelines for Developing Basic Green Plans Considering Biodiversity, both of which are published by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism. Moreover, the Organization for Landscape and Urban Green Infrastructure, the operator of SEGES, is a core member of the 30by30 Alliance, aimed at promoting efforts to achieve “30 by 30,” one of the main targets of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework.
