The CITIZEN Group participates in and endorses various domestic and international initiatives to contribute to the realization of a sustainable society in response to our social responsibility as a manufacturer and the demands of the international community.
In April 2005, The CITIZEN Group announced its participation in the United Nations Global Compact, which is based on the ten principles of human rights, labor, environment, and anti-corruption advocated by the United Nations. The UN Global Compact is the foundation of The CITIZEN Group’s CSR activities. For example, we refer to it when we revise The CITIZEN Group Code of Conduct. The CITIZEN Group is also a member of 13 subcommittees of Global Compact Network Japan (GCNJ), which consists of companies participating in the UN Global Compact: Supply Chain Subcommittee, Environmental Management Subcommittee, Internal Penetration Research Subcommittee, Human Rights Education Subcommittee, Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) Subcommittee, SDGs Subcommittee, ESG Subcommittee, CSV Subcommittee, WEPs Subcommittee, Reporting Research Subcommittee, Human Rights Due Diligence (HRDD) Subcommittee, and Circular Economy Subcommittee. Each subcommittee shares the latest CSR-related trends and case studies from each company through measures such as holding lectures given by experts, while at the same time producing a variety of outputs to support corporate CSR promotion based on the experience of participating companies in a wide range of industries. The knowledge gained at the subcommittee meetings is also reflected in The CITIZEN Group’s CSR activities.
In June 2021, CITIZEN WATCH announced its support for the "30% by 2030" challenge initiative of the Japan Business Federation (Keidanren). The "30% by 2030" challenge initiative is aimed at achieving a goal of increasing the ratio of female executives to 30% or more by 2030 as set forth in the New Growth Strategy announced by Keidanren in November 2020. The CITIZEN Group will continue to promote diversity and inclusion by working to encourage the active participation of a diverse range of people.
As a measure to mitigate climate change, one of the most serious global environmental risks, The CITIZEN Group is making Group-wide efforts to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions through energy-saving activities at its factories and offices and the introduction of electricity derived from renewable energy sources.
As an expression of our commitment to climate change mitigation, we have joined the Japan Climate Initiative and declared our support for the Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures (TCFD) recommendations in 2020. Furthermore, in 2022, we revised the Group’s CO2 emission reduction targets, spanning Scope 1, Scope 2, and Scope 3 emissions. In addition, measures to respond to large-scale disasters due to climate change are stipulated in our disaster Business Continuity Plan (BCP).
CITIZEN WATCH has obtained validation from the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi)* for CITIZEN Group Environmental Goals 2030, which outline our GHG emissions reduction targets for 2030, in recognition of their alignment with science-based standards for the achievement of the Paris Agreement targets. The CITIZEN Group has consistently advanced endeavors aimed at diminishing GHG emissions. These efforts encompass energy-saving measures within manufacturing processes, the transition to LED lighting, and the establishment of photovoltaic power generation systems. Our commitment remains resolute in integrating renewable energy solutions and collaborating with both customers and suppliers to curtail GHG emissions across the entire supply chain. This approach serves to realize our aspiration for a sustainable society.
The CITIZEN Group has worked to achieve virtually zero CO2 emissions from its factories and offices and to limit CO2 emissions throughout the value chain to levels that make it possible to constrain global warning. To further accelerate our efforts toward a decarbonized society, we have joined RE100, aiming to achieve net-100% renewable electricity for use in The CITIZEN Group’s overall business activities by 2040.
In the future as well, we will continue our efforts to curtail CO2 emissions across the entire supply chain by introducing renewable energy solutions and collaborating with both customers and suppliers, thereby realizing a sustainable society.
Since 2019, CITIZEN WATCH has been a member of the Japan Climate Initiative (JCI), a network of a variety of non-national-government entities, including companies, local governments, NGOs, and other organizations, that are committed to combating climate change. Supporting JCI’s basic declaration, “Joining the front line of the global trend for decarbonization from Japan,” we take part in JCI’s efforts to urge the Japanese government to implement necessary climate change policies through the joint declarations it issues periodically. We also actively collect the latest information on countermeasures against climate change through JCI-hosted events to enhance our efforts.
CITIZEN WATCH is a supporting member of the Japan Climate Leaders’ Partnership (JCLP), a group of companies committed to realizing a sustainable, decarbonized society.
In the revised CITIZEN Group Environmental Vision 2050, adopted in April 2020, The CITIZEN Group wholeheartedly commits to decarbonization by achieving virtually zero GHG emissions and to the sustainable utilization of resources. In particular, to resolve one of the material issues identified within our Medium-term Management Plan 2024, "responding to climate change and contributing to creating a recycling-oriented society," we are intensifying our efforts in the realm of climate change initiatives. This includes the attainment of SBTi validation, a milestone achieved in January 2023.
Seizing the occasion of our participation in the JCLP, The CITIZEN Group aspires to actualize a decarbonized society in alignment with the principles of the Paris Agreement. This endeavor involves advancing decarbonization initiatives through the robust adoption of renewable energy and complementary measures. By doing so, we are dedicated to playing a role in the realization of a sustainable society.
The CITIZEN Group has declared its support for the disclosure recommendations issued in September 2023 by the Task Force on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD), and the Group also registered as a TNFD Adopter in April 2025.
Guided by The CITIZEN Group Biodiversity Vision, the Group acknowledges the intrinsic significance of ecosystem services derived from biodiversity, as well as the influence our business undertakings exert on biodiversity. In this pursuit, we are resolute in collaborating with local communities to safeguard and conserve biodiversity. We will also work to align our activities and disclosures with the TNFD recommendations.
We are committed to sustaining our collaboration with the TNFD to facilitate the creation of the envisioned information disclosure framework. Concurrently, we will advance the judicious dissemination of data concerning natural capital, working steadfastly to cultivate a bond of confidence with our stakeholders – encompassing shareholders, investors, and beyond. Through these efforts, we are dedicated to perpetually augmenting our corporate value.
On April 26, 2023, The CITIZEN Group joined the 30by30 Alliance for Biodiversity, an initiative to preserve biodiversity, which is an important issue for global environmental conservation.
The Alliance is a collaborative coalition comprising companies, local governments, organizations, and more, with a shared objective to enhance the existing protected areas in Japan (constituting about 20% of the land area and 13% of the marine area). The primary aim is to certify and oversee regions designated for biodiversity preservation efforts, known as Other Effective Area-based Conservation Measures (OECM*). These areas encompass private corporate forests and other spaces actively engaged in biodiversity conservation. The overarching goal is to contribute to the international 30x30 commitment, which seeks to safeguard 30% of the world's land and ocean territories by the year 2030.
Grounded in The CITIZEN Group Biodiversity Vision, the Group has been consistently engaged in conserving gossamer-winged butterfly species that inhabit its operational sites, specifically the orurishijimi (Shijimiaeoides divinus; a kind of blue) and the miyamashijimi (Reverdin’s blue). Through active participation in the Alliance, we are committed to sustaining collaboration with local communities to advance biodiversity preservation. This commitment is driven by an understanding of the inherent significance of biodiversity's advantages, notably ecosystem services, and an awareness of the influence our business operations wield on biodiversity.
The CITIZEN Group endorses the Keidanren Initiative for Biodiversity Conservation, and our biodiversity philosophy is consistent with the principles of the organization's Declaration of Biodiversity.
CITIZEN WATCH endorses the Partnership Building Declaration.
We are committed to adhering to the Partnership Building Declaration outlined below. Our aim is to foster novel partnerships by facilitating collaboration and mutual coexistence with our network of supply chain partners and value-driven enterprises.
The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) were launched in 2016 with the aim of solving social issues relating to poverty, hunger, energy, climate change, and peaceful societies, among others, by 2030. The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, which sets the 17 SDGs with 169 specific targets, calls for action toward the achievement of the goals through global partnership between all UN Member States, as well as all people, based on shared ownership of the goals. As a member of the international community, The CITIZEN Group will contribute to the formation of a sustainable society by working to solve social issues, including the achievement of the SDGs, through the Group's businesses that are "Loved by Citizens and Working for Citizens." Through further business expansion, we aim to be a company that can continue to operate for the next 100 years.
