Environmental Management

We have established a group-wide environmental management system and continue to promote environmental management aimed at optimizing activities throughout the Citizen Group and producing results efficiently and reliably.

Environmental Management System

The Citizen Group created a Group environmental management system to carry out efficient environmental management. Once or twice each year, operational management company personnel with responsibility for environmental matters gather and hold a meeting of the Group Environmental Management Committee, which is chaired by the Citizen Holdings director responsible for environmental matters, to consider Group environmental policies and common issues and share information on environmental programs. All production companies in Japan have acquired ISO 14001 certification, and overseas production companies have acquired certification or are undertaking measures in compliance with the standards. Based on the new Medium-Term Environmental Plan that commenced in fiscal 2013, in 2014 we will work toward consolidated Group ISO 14001 certification in an effort to optimize groupwide activities, reinforce governance, and boost efficiency.

Environmental Education and Awareness Building Efforts

Implementing environmental management requires that all Group employees have a strong awareness of the importance of environmental measures. For this reason, the Group conducts environmental training and environmental courses taught by outside expert instructors for all employees. In fiscal 2013, we augmented the environmental education section of the Group environmental website and introduced environmental e-learning.

Example Initiative Citizen Group

Introducing E-Learning to Promote Awareness

The Citizen Group is carrying out Group-wide environmental education activities for all employees. Fiscal 2015 activities included environmental education using an e-learning format, with the themes of 3R and waste.

We also carried out Group training for employees who were unable to use the Web-based training materials.

Out of 7,094 employees, 6,682 (94.2%) underwent this training, more than in the previous fiscal year. We will continue initiatives to help employees enjoy their training.

Example Initiative Citizen Watch Manufacturing

CSR & Environment Division Meeting

Citizen Watch Manufacturing Co., Ltd., was established in 2013 to integrate five domestic production companies with Citizen Watch manufacturing divisions. With the slogan of “Building the World’s Foremost Watch Factory,” our aim goes beyond providing quality—that is a given—to also being respected for eco-friendliness. Our regular monthly meetings bring together division managers from all factories to discuss the progress of activities based upon our environmental policy as well as to share information about updated laws and regulations and discuss our responses.

Environmental Audits

Each Citizen Group company is subject to an external audit by an ISO examination organization once each year as well as an internal audit conducted by an internal auditor one to two times annually. These audits assess compliance with environmental laws and regulations and the operational status of environmental management systems and chemical substance controls. Corrective measures are immediately taken to address any indications identified by the audits and continuous improvements are made. As a result, indications concerning chemical and hazardous substance use management or responses to emergency situations have been almost entirely eliminated, and the Group is undertaking even more advanced risk management.

Internal Group Environmental Audits

In November and December 2015, we conducted environmental audits of Group companies focused on managing hazardous materials in the workplace and on various related compliance issues. Outside auditors’ requests for better management of hazardous materials prompted these audits, which aimed to confirm and enhance employee awareness of the risks posed by chemical substances.
Internal auditors selected from Group companies also performed audits of other companies within the Group, raising awareness of areas where these companies’ environmental activities excelled and where improvement was required and sharing this information. This process provided an opportunity for closer collaboration among Group companies. We are using the results of these internal environmental audits to enhance environmental activities throughout the Group and strengthen governance.

Environmental Risk Management

The Citizen Group makes compliance with environmental laws and regulations, control of chemical substances in products, waste and recycling governance, soil and subterranean water contamination countermeasures, and other issues subject to environmental risk management. The Group Environmental Management Committee holds regular meetings, and detailed information is exchanged concerning current conditions at and responsive measures taken by individual Group companies with regard to waste and recycling governance and soil contamination.

Soil & Groundwater Pollution Surveys and Responses Taken

In fiscal 2006, the Group conducted an historical survey of the use of hazardous substances at all domestic and overseas production sites and ranked responses according to five levels. Voluntary assessments of soil and underground water are being conducted at sites thought to be at high risk of contamination. If the soil survey results indicate contamination in excess of environmental standards, notice is provided to the authorities in accordance with the law, countermeasures are taken based on government guidance, and disclosures are made.
