Enhanced lineups of Environmentally Friendly Products

The CITIZEN Group is keenly aware of the impact that our products have on the environment and endeavor to improve the environmental quality as well as the reliability and safety of theproducts.

Expand our lineups of environmentally friendly products

We havebeen taking steps to expand our lineups of environmentally friendly products. Only products that meet all of our assessment criteria, including “resource and energy efficiency,”“reuse and recycling,”“long-term usability,”“environmental conservation (hazardous chemical substance management),”“the provision of environmental information” and “packaging,” are certified as environmentally friendly products. In terms of compliance with REACH regulations*1 and the RoHS directive*2, meanwhile, we have introduced a dedicated management system and enforced chemical substance management accordingly.

*1: REACH regulation
A European Union regulation on registration, evaluation, and authorization of chemicals. It has been in force since June 1, 2007, and imposes obligations to identify controlled substances and to register hazard information on companieshandling chemicals at predetermined quantities.

*2: RoHS directive
A European Union directive torestrict the use of hazardous substances. (It has banned the sale of electric and electronic products containing the six chemicals, lead, cadmium, mercury, hexavalent chromium, polybrominated biphenyl (PBB), and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), within the European Union since July 2006.)

We have revised theGroup Green Procurement Standards in response to global environmental regulations on products. In this vein, in addition to providing products that are even safer and more reliable than before, we haveresponded to the requests of our business partners and consumers by providing ample information to ensure that our products are used safely. Furthermore, based on legally stipulated risk assessments, we haveconducted environmental audits of outside suppliers and analyze high-risk products.

Evaluation Standards of environmentally friendly products

The environmentally friendly products need to meet the evaluation standards for all the items to evaluate.

  Evaluation items Evaluation Criteria

Example Initiative CITIZEN WATCH

Eco Products Awards

The Eco Products Awards ceremony was presented during the Eco Products 2016 Exhibition held at Tokyo Big Sight. CITIZEN WATCH was entered with Eco-Drive. We did not win the Minister’s Prize:however, we receivedthe Chairperson's Award, Eco-Products Awards Steering Committee.” The Chairperson Akio Morishima (professor emeritus, Nagoya University) presented the award to the Senior Operating Officer Kihara at the podium. The award was icing on the cake for the Eco-Drive 40th anniversary.

CITIZEN WATCH Receives Eco Mark Award Gold Prize

CITIZEN WATCH received a gold award at the “Eco Mark Award 2014,” organized by the Japan Environment Association. This award recognizes outstanding activities of companies/groups,which greatly contribute to realization of sustainable society, through selection of products by being conscious of consumers’ environmental awareness and through their efforts to improve their environmental activities. Such activities as manufacturing, selling, promoting, and awareness raising toward environmentally friendly products are subject to this award.
In 1996, CITIZEN received Eco Mark product certification as the first company in the watch industry to produce watches featuring “Eco-Drive.” This light-powered technology harnesses light from any natural or artificial source and converts it into energy for watches. Since then, CITIZEN has continued to lead the watch industry toward eco-consciousness through various efforts, such as making 99% of watches sold in Japan under the CITIZEN brand environmentally friendly. These efforts include improving the performance of the environmentally friendly Eco-Drive technology and fusing technology and beautiful design. The result is an attractive product lineup that allows consumers to choose a watch that matches their personal preferences and that they can use for a long period.
CITIZEN has also contributed to the exposure of Eco Mark in various consumer-facing materials, including its product catalog, website, and in-store tools. This exposure has improved name recognition of CITIZEN’s Eco-Drive technology and increased consumer consciousness about environmentally friendly products.

Life cycle assessment (LCA) initiatives

Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) is a method to evaluate all types of environmental impact quantitatively, based on the amounts of resources and energy taken in and waste discharged at each stage of the product life cycle, from material procurement to production, logistics, consumption, recycling and disposal.
To promote determination and reduction of environmental impact, in FY 2007, the CITIZEN Group began considering effective application of LCA with the aim of calculating and applying LCA data in product planning discussions, design changes, production process improvement, and other areas.

Result of LCA on Calculator PrinterCITIZEN SYSTEMS JAPAN

CITIZEN SYSTEMS JAPAN conducted LCA on the PA600 calculator printer, marking the first time the company conducted LCA on a printer.
The chart below shows data on environmental impact calculated from the perspective of global warming, in each stage of the printer's life cycle from production to disposal.
The results of the analysis show that 93% of total CO2 emissions for the life cycle occur during use of the printer. We will work to mitigate the environmental impact of new products in the development stage under the theme of creating products that consume little electricity during use.
