Effective Utilization of Resources and Reduction of Waste

We are continually striving to reduce waste in every area of the workplace, from the factory floor to offices and employee cafeterias, and are also working to improve recycling so as to help create a recycling-based society.

Implementing Waste Reduction Activities

To contribute to the creation of a recycling-based society, the Citizen Group is implementing measures to achieve zero waste emissions (recycling rate of at least 99%) through recycling, as well as by reducing the amount of waste. In fiscal 2015, the Group reached its goal, achieving a 99% recycling rate, with 23 offices reporting zero waste.

Waste Reduction Activities

The Iida Tatsue Factory of Citizen Systems, which produces commercial printers, is concentrating on reducing waste as a way of lowering costs. ①By collaborating with waste contractors, the factory has reduced the amount of cardboard for recycling, eliminating waste transportation costs. ②Careful separation of waste plastics from the factory has enabled partial material recycling, achieving a 25% drop in overall processing costs for waste plastics. ③Packaging (cushioning) for the transportation of semi-finished goods was previously discarded; however, after evaluating its characteristics if reused in transportation, we decided to reuse packaging materials for finished goods. A 50% reduction in packaging used in transportation lowered waste volumes as well as purchasing costs. This collaboration with waste contractors led to mutually beneficial relationships, with significant reductions in waste and cost savings. We also obtained important information and proposals about recycling. We intend to make use of this information to reduce our environmental impact further.

To reduce waste at its Karuizawa head office, Citizen Machinery Co.,Ltd. is using microorganisms to perform biodegradation of waste paint including organic compounds. The zero-waste processing system consists of a wet paint booth that recovers paint mist from a water flow that includes microorganisms, a processing tank equipped with a device that supplies oxygen to the microorganisms and a stirring device. The only waste is inorganic substances such as pigments, and the volume of waste has been slashed by approximately two-thirds compared to the prior recovery method, which used chemicals to separate waste paint. In addition, the microorganism processing eliminates the unique odor of the organic compounds and the viscosity of the paint sludge, contributing to improvement in the work environment and reducing equipment cleaning and maintenance.

Water Reductions

Citizen Watch Manufacturing Co., Ltd., is working to make its Tohoku Factory a “clean factory.” Through a tie-up with the Kitakami Works and headquarters, the company has been reducing industrial water usage in its surface-processing department since end of August 2014.
①Water-saving awareness campaign ②Better understanding of accurate quantities of water in effluent treatment and waste elimination ③Largest reductions possible in scrubber overflow These activities have reduced by 13% the amount of water used in the acid and alkaline wash process that enters the factory wastewater treatment facilities. In the future, we plan to study the usage of recycled water further.
