In 2013, Citizen Watch began participating in the “Because I am a Girl” campaign, conducted by Plan International, an NGO that offers support to girls and women in developing countries. Citizen Watch provides support for the campaign in such ways as donating a portion of the proceeds from sales of its “Citizen xC” watches. Proceeds collected in 2015 were put to meaningful use in an educational project for girls in Pakistan as well as a project to improve the livelihood of women in Mali. The project in Pakistan contributed to an educational curriculum at a newly established Islamic girls’ school as well as to the upgrading of water supplies and sanitary facilities at the school. Furthermore, a committee was established through the project to manage the school and efforts were made to strengthen the management capabilities of committee members. Activities to raise awareness toward encouraging girls’ education were also implemented under the project. Citizen Watch will continue to support the “Because I am a Girl” campaign through the planning, advertising, and sale of its products.

The "Because I am a Girl" Campaign

Plan International, an NGO, conducts this global campaign in an attempt to impart the "strength to live" to girls living in difficult circumstances at the margins of society. Girls and women in developing countries are often bereft of the chance to acquire an education, being compelled to do housework from an early age. Frequently marrying when they are themselves in their teens, the lives of these "child brides" are often shortened by early pregnancy and childbirth. Plan International endeavors to provide educational opportunities for girls and women in difficult circumstances, thereby addressing the global problem of poverty.

Donation of an Automatic Lathe to a Thai Engineering School

Citizen Machinery Asia

Donation of an Automatic Lathe to a Thai Engineering School

In August 2015, Citizen Machinery Asia (CMA) donated a CMA automatic lathe to the Saraburi School of Technology, from which a number of its employees have graduated. CMA has long been concerned about the difficulty of finding applicants with skills and experience using an automatic lathe. Prior to the gift, there had been no schools in the area with automatic lathes where students could learn engineering theory. Through this donation, CMA hopes to not only grant promising students better employment opportunities but also increase the number of highly skilled students in Thailand, thereby contributing to the country’s economic development. CMA is using this opportunity to set up a system to accept student interns as part of its ongoing effort to expand employment opportunities. CMA will continue efforts to build favorable relationships with the local community in which it operates as well as increase the value of the Citizen brand.

To mark its 45th anniversary, Citizen Electronics donated a projector equipped with one of its LED packages to Chureito Pagoda of Arakura Sengen Park in Fujiyoshida. These new LED projectors have excellent color reproducing capabilities. While the old projector left Chureito Pagoda merely tinged green, the new one illuminates the pagoda with vivid colors. The new projector is also able to achieve the same brightness as the old projector while using far less energy. In addition, as LED lights have little infrared and ultraviolet output, they control color fading and degradation and attract less insects. LED lights also represent an environmentally friendly product due to the fact that they do not contain the toxic substance mercury.
