We continually explore measures and compile specific action plans to ensure employees' health and safety at our Tokyo Office, primarily through the Health and Safety Committee.
Safety activities depend fundamentally on eliminating risks in the workplace and on the ability of individual employees to detect and avoid dangers. We comprehensively improve safety standards via a dedicated facility safety assessment committee and carry out risk assessments and workplace swap patrols to eliminate risk factors. The primary challenge for fiscal 2010 was to raise the health level amongst employees.
The practice of regularly doing exercises such as walking on the premises, walking stairs, and physical exercises during the lunch break was promoted as Midday Sports Club Activities in a manner that displays results in visible form in the workplace and boosts employee motivation. Two automated external defibrillators (AEDs) were added to ensure that at least one of the three AEDs is within three minutes reach from anywhere on the premises. After lifesaving training, 7% of the employees are now capable of operating AEDs.

At Citizen Precision Hachinohe Co., Ltd., education was conducted under the fiscal 2010 health education theme of "cutting back on dietary habits." After first listening to an explanation about meal balance guides, each individual calculated their ideal energy and colored in their own spinning top, representing their meal balance, classifying the foods they ate into staple food, side dishes, main dishes, dairy products, fruits and luxury items based on a meal check sheet. Finally, all participants considered together how to spin their own top and set goals towards their next medical checkup. Looking at the completed spinning top, many people had too few side dishes overall, and we believe that this gave them the opportunity to reconsider the meals in the future. For the regular medical checkups in April 2011, we hope that improvements to dietary habits will have the effect of decreasing the rate of positive-findings, if only by a little.
At Citizen Precision Hachinohe Co., Ltd., road safety education for fiscal 2010 was conducted by a safety education offices invited from the Hachinohe Police Department. Under the theme of “Eradicating Drink-Driving,” attendees were introduced to recent trends in accidents, actual cases of alcohol-related accidents and campaigns being run against drink-driving. Finally, everyone listened to the song Tsugunai (Atonement) by singer Masashi Sada, who sang, “ the owner with a kind and earnest heart who was the perpetrator of a traffic accident.” The lyrics brought some in attendance to tears as the song played. Recognizing that fatal traffic accidents were a tragic situation for both the perpetrators and the victims, all employees pledged to eradicate drink-driving.
At Citizen Machinery Co., Ltd., we have begun an initiative to maintain the mental health of employees, with a particular focus on mental health issues due to overwork. To prevent employees from developing mental issues, we hold counseling sessions once a month with an outside industrial counselor, and conduct mental health education every six months. In the future we will tackle the lack of awareness over self-care and line-care (activities by managers to make working environments conducive to mental health), how to interact with industrial counselors and ways of examining the state of someone’s mental health.
We hold regular meetings between Citizen Group companies and the labor union acting on behalf of our employees to negotiate and discuss issues such as management policy and working conditions and strive to forge stable relationships between labor and management based on mutual respect for the other party's position. We will continue to discuss issues such as the Group's operating structure and business restructuring in the future in an effort to enhance the corporate value of individual Group companies and improve levels of employee satisfaction.
