Summary of fiscal 2010 and issues for the future

For fiscal 2010, we focused our efforts on the four major challenges. For fiscal 2011, we will continue to improve Group-wide levels in a sustained effort to produce positive results.

Efforts at Each Group Company

7S Activities as part of the Phoenix Plan at Chinese Plants

Patrolling as a Part of 7S Activities

The Phoenix Plan (an initiative aimed at avoiding China-specific risks such as a sharp rise in personnel costs and a rolling back of preferential taxation) refers to a set of activities being uniquely implemented by Citizen Precision Guangzhou Ltd., a Chinese subsidiary of Citizen Seimitsu Co., Ltd. The plan has entered its second year. To step up the activities in fiscal 2010, innovations to jumpstart efforts such as activity briefing sessions and a new awards program are carried out periodically, and efforts have been made to expand the scope of the plan. A “greeting movement” is also being adopted as an initiative to promote full employee participation, which has been one of our challenges. We have set the goal of reaching 4,000 cumulative participants by March 2013, and at the end of January 2011, participation stood at 1,306 people, exceeding the goal at the current stage with a transitional achievement rate of 106%. With the dispatch of a representative from a department excelling in the activities to parent company Citizen Seimitsu Co., Ltd. in November 2010, efforts to further raise the level of activities are being implemented concurrently.

Expansion of 6SE Activities at Chinese Plant

At Astar Precision Co., Ltd., a Chinese subsidiary of Citizen Tohoku Co., Ltd., 6S (5S + “Safety”) activities have been implemented continuously since 2006 under the slogan “Let’s all greet one another together and clean together” as a means of awareness-raising and personnel training for employees. With the addition of “Environment” in 2009, these efforts have developed into 6SE activities. To spread these activities throughout the company, the company publishes the ASTAR VOICE, an in-house PR magazine that allows employees to understand and put into practice training and courses of action regarding greetings, 6SE activities, and company rules. Other activities being implemented include weekly tours and audits of the plant as well as fire drills and evacuation drills conducted in April and December. As a result, greetings are strictly observed, the workplace has become clean and a favorable image has been created for customers. In addition, occupational accidents have been reduced by 20%. Looking ahead, Astar Precision Co., Ltd. will continue to comply with local laws, and under its philosophy of “Contributing to and Striving to be Respected by Citizens of the World,” engage in CSR activities while respecting the nature of the business, its history and corporate culture.

Project to Reform Corporate Culture

Citizen Seimitsu Co, Ltd. is working on activities to reform its corporate culture aimed at becoming an “energetic company.” 7S activities are being undertaken as the pillar of promoting these efforts. The activities started with the original five S’s (seiri, seiton, seiso, seiketsu, and shitsuke), and were later developed in a unique way with two additional S’s, which are saho (courtesy) and safety. While acquiring the good manners that will delight customers visiting the company premises nestled in the beautiful natural environment at the foot of Mt. Fuji, Citizen Seimitsu Co, Ltd. is also tackling workplace safety as a fundamental of manufacturing.
From fiscal 2010, there has been a shift from existing “office-driven activities” to “activities that respect the autonomy of each workplace.” Each workplace works on ingenuity based on the themes of 5S, safety, good manners, improvement activities, the environment and voluntary activities. The results of activities are presented at company-wide briefings held each month in an effort to share information.
Towards the further development of activities based on the corporate culture that has been cultivated to date, the entire company will continue to engage in unified efforts.
